एक समय के सुपरहिट म्यूजिक डायरेक्टर आर. डी बर्मन जो बाॅलिवुड को एक से एक सुपरहिट हिट गाने दे चुके थे, उनके पास कोई काम नहीं था। उनका बेहद मुश्किल दौर चल रहा था, जी हां ऐसा मुश्किल वक्त हर उच्च कोटी के कलाकार की जिंदगी में आता है, एक समय तो उनके पास काम ही काम होता है और एक समय वो इतने अकेले हो जाते है की उनके पास कोई नहीं आता काम देने के लिए या मिलने के लिए ।
कैसे डायरेक्टर विधु विनोद चोपड़ा ने आर.डी. बर्मन को चुना अपनी आने वाली फिल्म 1942 ए लव स्टोरी का म्युजिक डायरेक्टर जाने एक रोचक किस्सा। विनोद को यकीन था कि जिस मधुर संगीत की उन्हे तलाश है वो सिर्फ आर.डी.बर्मन ही दे सकते हैं।

फिल्म का पहले गाने पार काम शुरू हुआ गाना था कुछ ना कहो कुछ भी ना कहों, लेकिन जब पहली बार इस गाने की धुन बर्मन दा ने चोपड़ा साहब को सुनाई तो वो चैंक गये, क्योंकि ये धुन विधु विनोद चोपड़ा को बिल्कुल पसंद नहीं आई । विधु विनोद चोपड़ा जो बर्मन दा की बहुत इज्जत करते थे उन्होंने बिल्कुल सपष्ट शब्दों में कहा की ये म्युजिक या धुन मेरी फिल्म के काबिल नहीं है सच कहुं बुरा मत मानना ये बिल्कुल बकवास म्युजिक है, मुझे नहीं लगता था कि आप ऐसी धुन बनायेंगे।
ऐसे में वातावरण बहुत बोझिल हो गया पुरे कमरे में थोड़ी देर के लिए सन्नाटा छा गया एक एक कर सभी साथी म्युजिशियन कमरे से बाहर चले गये।

आर.डी जहा बैठे थे उनके ठीक उपर एस.डी.बर्मन का फोटो लगा था। विनोद उस फोटो को देख कर बोले असल में मैं उनकी तालश में हूं, और आप उनके सबसे करीब है, और आप ही है जो उनके मुकाबले का म्युजिक दे सकते हैं।

ये सुनकर आर.डी. की आखों में आंसु आ गये, और बोले मुझे सात दिन का वक्त दे दो। चोपड़ा साहब ने उन्हें ये वक्त दिया और सात दिन के बाद दुबारा धुन सुनने का समय आया। आर.डी.बर्मन ने नयी धुन सुनाना शुरू किया और ऐसी धुन बनी कि सुनसर चैपड़ा साहब मंत्र मुग्ध हो गये उनकी आखें बन्द हो गई और हाथ तारीफ में अपने आप उठ गये।
इसके बाद हर गाने की धुन एक से बड़ कर एक थी। आज भी हम 1942 ए लव स्टोरी के गाने हजारो बार सुन सकतें हैं, ऐसा म्युजिक दिया बर्मन दा ने जो अमर हो गया ।


लेकिन वाह री किस्मत अपना काम तो बर्मन दा ने पुरा किया लाजवाब म्युजिक दिया पर इसकी कामयाबी का जशन नहीं बना सके। फिल्म के रिलीज हाने से पहले ही वो ये दुनिया छोड़ चुके थे पर जाते जाते उन्हांेने ये नयाब तोहफा हम सब के लिए छोड़ दिया था। एक महान कैरियर का अंत इस तरह से हुआ शायद ये कहानी विधाता ने खुद अपने हाथों से लिखी थी।
